Coming to Anderson is in many ways a memoir, sharing work in prose, poem, and expository writing form, gathered over the course of many years. Within are twenty essays about Primus’ first move from Chicago to Anderson and his subsequent work in the community there. As one niece commented, the essays are valuable because they illustrate how things get done: taking readers on a journey from concept to solicitation of feedback, collecting the support of key decision-makers and the broader stakeholder community, and finally seeing the project come to fruition. The second section includes written correspondence that Primus shared with family over the years, including poignant letters he wrote to his nephews and grandnieces imparting the wisdom he gathered over many decades of hands-on work carving out a more equitable society for all.The third section presents communications, poetry, pictures, photos, and essays that provide a window into Primus' life. He had such a collage on one wall of the study where he spent most of his time reading and composing. In that room, stick-pinned to the wall, were clippings from letters, poetry, pictures like those drawn by young family members which delighted him, a picture of a photo like the one showing Nelson Mandela by the prize-winning photographer John H. White given to him by his brother-in-law, or serendipitous memos. The final section includes select articles from Primus’ time writing for the Herald Bulletin. During his tenure there, he penned over 700 weekly columns, many of which are still online. It remains an incredible output and full of his timeless insights. The writing and refining process is highlighted, including correspondence with C.M., a sister interested in learning and honing the craft of expository writing.About the photo poetry found throughout the book... Some pictures came from a sister's collection of family photos. The photos of flowers are by a younger sister whose photography Primus admired for its artistic flare and expertise. Interspersed are other photos of places and activities that Primus enjoyed. The hope is that this collection of Primus’ work will be a standing testament to his wit, wisdom, and dedication to uplifting those around him. Read more
